Can a girl go to prom alone?

Can someone please clarify for me, is it truly possible for a girl to attend the prom by herself? I've heard mixed opinions on the matter and I'm genuinely curious about what the social norms surrounding this situation are. Is it socially acceptable for a girl to go to prom alone, or is it generally expected that she attends with a date?
