Is Venom a girl or boy?

Excuse me, but I'm curious about something regarding the character Venom. Now, I understand that this may be a bit of a silly question, but it's been bugging me for a while. Is Venom meant to be portrayed as a girl or a boy? I know the character has a certain level of ambiguity and that's part of its charm, but I'm just trying to get a clear answer for my own understanding.
