Can I just buy an internet router?

Could you please clarify for me, am I able to simply purchase an internet router without any further considerations? I'm not quite sure if that's all I need to get started with a stable internet connection at home. Should I be looking into additional equipment or services? Is there anything else I should be aware of before making such a purchase? Your guidance would be greatly appreciated.
