Can you lose staked ETH?

I've been hearing a lot about staking ETH lately, and it sounds like a promising way to earn passive income. But I'm also a bit cautious and want to make sure I understand all the risks involved. So, can you actually lose the ETH you stake? Is there a possibility that your investment could go down in value, or even disappear entirely?
