Is WBTC as safe as BTC?

I've been hearing a lot about Wrapped Bitcoin, or WBTC, and its potential in the cryptosphere. But I'm still a bit skeptical about its safety. Can you enlighten me? Is WBTC really as safe as Bitcoin, BTC, itself? After all, wrapped assets are somewhat different from the original cryptocurrencies. I'm worried about the risks involved, especially with regards to hacks and frauds in the crypto world. Is there a chance that WBTC could be compromised in some way?
