Why is XRP so hard to buy?

I've been trying to purchase XRP for quite some time now, but it seems like an uphill task. Could you explain why buying XRP is so challenging? I've heard that it's not available on all exchanges, and the ones that do offer it often have limited trading pairs or high fees. Is there a specific reason behind this?
