LIT Keeps Hitting New Highs: What Is Lighter Doing Right?

Since Aug. 20, LIT, the token of perp DEX Lighter, which has a team background from former Citadel quants, has been setting new highs. By Aug. 26, LIT reached a peak of $3.8, nearly a 5x increase from its low of around $0.78 on March 30 this year.

First, it is important to note that LIT's circulating supply is currently only about 25% of the total. The portions allocated to the team and investors are locked until Dec. 30, 2026. The current selling pressure on LIT comes only from staking rewards, which are not large in quantity. During the price rise, users have stronger incentives to stake and tend to hold.

With limited circulating supply, LIT's buyback and burn is also substantial. According to the official dashboard, the amount of LIT repurchased has reached 17.3 million, accounting for 1.73% of the total supply and 6.92% of the circulating supply.

In July, in our article "Carving Out Territory with Robinhood: Is Lighter Playing a Bigger Game?" (https://foresightnews.pro/article/detail/98462), we analyzed the reasons for LIT's sustained rise, including the buyback and burn mechanism and the partnership with Robinhood. Beyond these business-level catalysts, Lighter has also made unique innovations at the chain level.

Before Lighter, on-chain derivatives essentially faced an impossible triangle. General-purpose L2s like Arbitrum have fees and latency unsuitable for high-frequency order placement. Independent chains like dYdX v4 and Hyperliquid sacrifice some security. StarkEx-style hybrid order books rely on centralized matching, which carries censorship and MEV risks.

Hyperliquid's self-built L1 uses HyperBFT consensus to run the matching engine directly on the validator set, achieving sub-second finality and throughput exceeding 200,000 transactions per second. The trade-off is that the security model relies entirely on itself, with dozens of validator nodes supporting the entire chain, and cross-chain asset transfers depend on bridges.

Lighter chose a different direction. It is a ZK Rollup built solely for trading. Matching, clearing, and risk control are all encapsulated in its self-developed Lighter Core. It uses a customized proof engine to generate zk-SNARK proofs and then submits the compressed state to the Ethereum mainnet. Compared to general-purpose zkVMs, this approach sacrifices generality in exchange for proof speed, latency stability, and execution efficiency for high-frequency order books. The official metrics are matching latency below 5 milliseconds and 20,000 orders and cancellations per block.

According to L2BEAT data, as an independently developed L2 that does not use existing ZK Rollup stacks, Lighter's TVL exceeds $1.1 billion, ranking fifth, behind only Base, Arbitrum, OP Mainnet, and Mantle.

Lighter's system consists of three roles. The sequencer orders transactions on a first-in-first-out basis and provides soft finality. The prover generates proofs for each block. Smart contracts on Ethereum custody user funds, store state roots, and verify each proof.

The real differentiation lies in what the circuit proofs cover. Most Rollups only prove that state transitions are valid. Lighter's circuits encode the exchange rules themselves as zk constraints. It uses a binary prefix tree structure called Order Book Tree to encode price-time priority into leaf indices, making proof complexity logarithmic. This means the protocol can cryptographically prove that the highest-priority orders are filled first, that funding rate caps are correctly enforced, and that liquidations use the correct formulas.

This is especially important for perpetual contracts. Leveraged positions are margined, and liquidation is automatic and mechanical. If you cannot verify whether liquidation was executed correctly, you are choosing to trust the platform at the moment when it has the least incentive to be honest with you. Verifiable liquidation is not marketing rhetoric; it is the core significance of this architecture.

As an Ethereum L2, Lighter inherits two things that independent L1s cannot provide.

The first is exit guarantees. If the sequencer persistently censors transactions, users can force-submit transactions directly on L1. If not processed for more than 14 days, the system freezes and enters Desert Mode. Users can rebuild state from on-chain data and submit balance proofs to withdraw, without any cooperation from the operator. L2BEAT has even actually reproduced this process, rebuilding the state root from L1 blob data and verifying it to the chain head. All state data needed to construct proofs is published on-chain, which is the prerequisite for this escape hatch to work.

The second is liquidity network effects. Lighter's funds are custodied in Ethereum contracts. Users can deposit directly from multiple chains such as Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, and Solana, and can reuse assets from Aave, Uniswap, and the Ethereum stablecoin ecosystem without complex cross-chain bridges. Hyperliquid's composability is limited to within HyperEVM and cannot directly tap into the hundreds of billions of dollars in TVL on Ethereum.

Also worth mentioning is LighterEVM's horizontal architecture. The core trading engine runs on custom ZK circuits, while general-purpose smart contracts run in a parallel zkVM environment. The two are logically separated but can atomically share state. Even if on-chain lending protocols are congested, the matching speed of the core order book is unaffected, and developers can build structured products on the EVM side that directly read the order book.

Just yesterday, Lighter published an update on its verification system. Over the past month, Lighter's average block verification time dropped from about 5.3 minutes to about 1 minute, achieved through two independent improvements. First, "heavy/light decomposition" splits verification circuits based on transaction complexity, so that simple transactions, which account for over 98% of the total, only pay lower verification costs. This improvement halved verification time. Second, results from a prover optimization competition co-hosted with Eigen Labs targeted pure infrastructure-level optimization of the Plonky2 prover. The first batch of results went live on Aug. 23, again cutting verification time by more than half.

A little-known fact is that when tokenized RWAs first began to emerge, the chain with the most on-chain RWA assets was ZKsync.

There is only one reason: security.

Even today, ZKsync still ranks in the top ten, ahead of Arbitrum, Polygon, and Base, which appear stronger on paper. The advantage of ZK proofs is that although finality strictly speaking still requires confirmation from the Ethereum mainnet, the credibility of transactions is actually already verified on the L2. For institutions, even if it is slightly slower or more expensive than other L2s or self-built L1s, it is completely acceptable.

Compared to general-purpose ZK Rollups like ZKsync and Starknet, and even compared to specialized L2s developed on those stacks, Lighter's biggest advantage is that it writes trading, clearing, and other logic directly into circuits. Combined with Ethereum mainnet-level security, this mechanism is even more secure than traditional clearinghouses, giving it full capability to establish a foothold in the fiercely competitive perp DEX market.

The partnership with Robinhood is a case in point. Besides also using payment for order flow and having a deep team background, the mechanism Lighter provides gives it unique advantages in security and compliance. The market is willing to pay a premium for this architecture, and the logic is clear. For projects that want to sell perpetual contracts to Robinhood users and traditional financial institutions, "matching rules written in circuits, fund security backed by Ethereum" is a story that can be told to compliance departments and auditors.

Hyperliquid proved that performance can come from consensus. Lighter is proving that trust can come from proofs. While other perp DEXs rack their brains over operations and business, Lighter has carved out a new "path."
