What Is Copy Trading & How To Start Copy Trading On BTCC: A Beginner’s Guide
Copy trading in the crypto landscape enables traders to leverage the expertise of successful cryptocurrency traders and potentially profit from their trading strategies. With the fast development of cryptocurrency, copy trading has emerged as one of the most popular trading strategies for crypto enthusiasts, especially for newcomers.
Crypto copy trading lets you automatically follow the trades of another trader instead of opening and closing every position yourself. On BTCC, users can browse lead traders, compare performance metrics, set their own copy trading parameters, and automatically mirror eligible futures trades.
This guide explains how BTCC Futures Copy Trading works, how to find a lead trader, how to set up your copy trading parameters, and how to monitor or stop your copy trades. Because futures trading involves leverage, copy trading can amplify both gains and losses, so choosing a trader and setting appropriate risk controls are essential.

What is Copy Trading?
Crypto copy trading is a trading method that allows users to automatically replicate the trades of another trader, often called a “lead trader.” Instead of manually opening and closing every position, followers configure their own copy trading parameters and the system mirrors eligible trades according to those settings.
This strategy is particularly appealing to novice traders or those who lack the time or expertise to make informed trading decisions. Copy trading gives investors the flexibility to select traders to follow based on their preferred trading style, risk appetite and historical performance, which could improve their own trading outcomes and experience.
On BTCC, Futures Copy Trading allows users to follow leveraged futures strategies, including both long and short positions.
Potential Benefits of Copy Trading
- Learn from experienced traders
Copy trading can help users observe how experienced traders manage positions, entries, exits, and risk.
- Save time
Automated trade replication can reduce the need to manually monitor every trading opportunity.
- Simplify the trading process
Once your parameters are configured, eligible trades can be copied automatically according to your settings.
- Maintain predefined risk controls
Features such as maximum copy amount, copy trading stop loss, take profit, and stop loss can help users define how much risk they are willing to take.
How does Copy Trading Work?
Crypto copy trading is a system where traders can automatically mirror the trading actions of experienced professionals, often called “lead traders.”To begin copy trading in the cryptocurrency market, the first step is to establish an account with a reputable copy trading provider like BTCC that facilitates access to various cryptocurrencies.
Post account creation, you can browse different traders’ strategies to find ones that align with your risk tolerance and investment goals connect their accounts to a platform that facilitates copy trading.
- Lead traders: These are experienced professionals or skilled investors whose trades followers replicate. They often earn commissions based on the profits generated for their followers.
- Followers: These are individuals who choose to copy the strategies of lead traders, allowing them to benefit from expert-level decisions without actively trading themselves.
Upon selecting your lead traders, the copy trading platform seamlessly mirrors their transactions within your trading account. It’s crucial to notice that while copy trading enables you to harness the proficiency of seasoned traders, it does not ensure profitability.
The success of your copy trading strategy will depend on the performance of the traders you choose to follow, as well as the prevailing market dynamics.
How BTCC Copy Trading Works
The process can be simplified into five steps:
1. Choose a lead trader: Browse the Market Board, Top Picks, or search for a specific trader.
2. Review the trader: Check metrics such as 30-day PnL, PnL%, win rate, AUM, trading history, and supported contracts.
3. Set your parameters: Choose Fixed Margin or Proportional Margin and set your maximum copy amount and risk controls.
4. Start copying: Once your settings are confirmed, eligible trades opened or closed by the lead trader can be mirrored automatically.

With these robust customization options, BTCC’s copy trading system strikes the perfect balance between automation and personal control. It empowers users to follow experienced traders while maintaining a firm grip on risk management.
Transparent Profit-Sharing System
When you follow a lead trader on the BTCC platform, a portion of your profits—typically between 10% and 15%—is allocated to the lead trader as a commission. The exact percentage is determined by their designated profit-sharing ratio.
For example, if you replicate a trade from a lead trader with a 10% profit-sharing fee and earn 100 USDT, the lead trader receives 10 USDT, while you retain the remaining 90 USDT.
BTCC implements a tiered profit-sharing system, where a lead trader’s commission rate is based on their 30-day average Assets Under Management (AUM). The breakdown of these tiers is as follows:
| Level | 30-Day Average AUM (USDT) | Profit Sharing % |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | < 0 USDT | 10% |
| 2 | ≤ 50,000 USDT | 12% |
| 3 | ≤ 300,000 USDT | 13% |
| 4 | ≤ 1,000,000 USDT | 15% |

BTCC provides a diverse range of perpetual contract pairs for copy trading, offering traders a broad selection of assets to follow. Whether you prefer major cryptocurrencies or want to explore trending altcoins, the platform ensures ample opportunities to match your investment interests.

How to Find a Lead Trader on BTCC
BTCC provides several ways to discover lead traders.
On the Futures Copy Trading page, you can browse the Market Board, check Top Picks, or search for a specific trader by nickname.

The Market Board lets you sort or filter traders using metrics such as Overall Ranking, Total PnL, AUM, PnL%, Win Rate, Rising Stars, and Number of Copy Traders. These filters can help you narrow down traders based on the performance characteristics you are looking for.
1. Market Board
The Market Board is the main place to compare lead traders. You can switch between different ranking metrics instead of relying on a single leaderboard position.
2. Top Picks
Top Picks highlights selected lead traders based on factors such as performance and risk management. It can be a useful starting point for beginners, but a Top Pick is not a guarantee of future performance.
3. Search Trader
If you already know a trader’s nickname, use the Search Trader function to find their profile directly.
How to Choose a Lead Trader for Copy Trading
Before copying a lead trader, look beyond short-term PnL. Consider the trader’s trading history, 30-day PnL, win rate, AUM, number of trading days, maximum drawdown, trading frequency, supported contracts, and profit-sharing ratio.
A trader with a high recent return may also be taking significantly higher risks. A longer trading history across different market conditions can provide more context than a short period of strong performance.
| Metric | What It Tells You |
|---|---|
| 30D PnL / PnL% | Recent trading performance |
| Win Rate | Percentage of profitable trades |
| AUM | Approximate capital managed through the trader |
| Trading Days | How long the trader has been active |
| Maximum Drawdown | Potential downside experienced historically |
| No. of Copy Traders | How many users are following the trader |
| Leading Contracts | Markets and contracts the trader mainly trades |
| Profit Sharing Ratio | Portion of eligible profits shared with the lead trader |
These factors will give you a comprehensive understanding of the lead trader’s style and approach. Additionally, diversifying your portfolio by copying multiple traders can reduce risk compared to following just one.
However, it is worthing noting that crypto copy trading is not always profitable, even for lead traders. Hence, copying a lead trader’s strategy will not always guarantee profit and you should still manage your risks and be cautious about potential losses.
Recommended Lead Traders
BTCC may also display recommended lead traders based on different trading characteristics, such as short-term trading, steady performance, high trading volume, or higher-yield strategies. These recommendations can help you discover traders more quickly, but you should still review each trader’s performance and risk profile before copying.

How to Set Up BTCC Copy Trading Parameters
1. Choose a Copy Mode
BTCC currently supports two copy trading modes: Fixed Margin and Proportional Margin. Fixed Margin is the default mode.
- Fixed Margin
Fixed Margin allocates the same margin amount to each copied trade.
For example, if you set 50 USDT per trade, the system will use 50 USDT for each eligible copied position, subject to the applicable trading rules and limits.
BTCC currently supports a per-trade margin range of 10–100,000 USDT and a maximum copy margin range of 10–2,000,000 USDT.
- Proportional Margin
Proportional Margin determines the size of a copied position based on the lead trader’s position size and your selected copy ratio.
For example, if a lead trader opens a 10,000 USDT position and you set a 0.1x copy ratio, your copied position would be calculated at 1,000 USDT.
2. Set Your Maximum Copy Amount
Your maximum copy amount limits the total margin you are willing to allocate to a lead trader.
Once the limit is reached, new trades from that trader will no longer be copied until sufficient capacity is available or you adjust your settings.
For example, if you set 50 USDT per trade and a 200 USDT maximum copy amount under Fixed Margin mode, the maximum allocation would allow up to four 50 USDT copied trades at the same time.
Advanced Copy Trading Settings
1. Copy Ongoing Positions
When enabled, BTCC can immediately copy positions that the lead trader is already holding when you start following them.
This option is enabled by default.
If the system detects a price deviation of more than 3% between your opening price and the lead trader’s entry price, the copy order will fail automatically as a protection measure.
2. Auto Update
When Auto Update is enabled, newly added trading pairs from the lead trader can be automatically synchronized and copied according to your settings.
This option is enabled by default.
3. Copy Trading Stop Loss
Copy Trading Stop Loss lets you define a maximum acceptable net loss for your copy trading relationship with a lead trader.
When the limit is reached, BTCC can stop copying the trader and manage the remaining copied positions according to your selected setting.
4. Take Profit per Order
Take Profit per Order allows you to set a take-profit rule for individual copied trades.
5. Stop Loss per Order
Stop Loss per Order allows you to automatically apply a stop-loss rule to individual copied trades.

On the BTCC app or Website, go to [My Copy Trades] > [My Traders], select the trader you want to stop copying, open [Copy Management], tap the settings icon, and confirm that you want to stop copying the lead trader.
Stopping copy trading does not necessarily mean that all existing positions are instantly removed. Before confirming, review how your existing copied positions will be handled and check your account to make sure there are no positions you still need to manage.
Copy Trading vs. Bot Trading
Bot trading involves using automated algorithms and user-programmed software to execute cryptocurrency trades based on pre-set criteria. The main difference between copy trading and bot trading is that in copy trading, you follow and replicate the trades of human traders, whereas in bot trading, automated systems carry out trades according to pre-programmed strategies without any human intervention.
Whether to use bot or copy trading in the cryptocurrency market depends on various factors, including individual risk tolerance, long-term trading objectives and the desired level of involvement in the trading process. While bot trading offers a more hands-off approach with the potential for high efficiency and speed, it also requires technical expertise and active risk management. Conversely, copy trading generally provides an easier entry point for beginners and offers learning opportunities; however, it also involves reliance on the expertise of others and limited control.
Ultimately, both methods have their own unique advantages and disadvantages. Those interested in exploring both strategies should conduct comprehensive research and consider their personal goals before selecting a particular approach. As the cryptocurrency market continues to evolve, adaptability and staying informed will be crucial for navigating its complexities and seizing opportunities.
Crypto Copy Trading vs. Crypto Social Trading
Many people often confuse crypto copy trading with crypto social trading because both methods involve collaborating with others on investments and making decisions based on their input. However, there are some key differences between the two.
Social trading is an investment approach in which traders come together to form a group and collaborate. Within this group, traders share research, tips and insights, allowing multiple individuals to optimise a trader’s portfolio collectively. Occasionally, investors may even pool their funds to make larger investments collectively. This form of investment has gained immense popularity, largely due to social media’s influence.
While both social trading and copy trading strive to enhance traders’ capabilities by harnessing the expertise of others, there are several fundamental differences between these two methodologies. Below are some deeper insights into the differences between social trading and copy trading:
| Comparison metrics | Social Trading | Copy Trading |
| Learning Opportunity | Social trading platforms generally facilitate extensive educational resources and foster communication among traders, fostering a conducive learning environment where users engage in discussions about strategies, collaborative trade analysis, and the sharing of insights. | copy trading platforms prioritize the outcome rather than the process, emphasizing less on learning and more on capitalizing on the proven expertise of accomplished traders. |
| Community Engagement | Social Trading emphasizes social interaction, where investors can exchange experience and share views to form an investment community. This interaction helps investors to obtain more information and improve the accuracy and efficiency of investment decisions. | Copy Trading is relatively independent, with investors focusing on the trading strategies of the people being followed.Copy trading platforms might offer some form of interaction, but the community aspect is generally less pronounced as the focus is on the performance of selected traders rather than communal interaction. |
| Control and Customization | Investors can make investment decisions independently on the basis of observing other investors’ behavior. They can choose whom to follow, which strategies to observe, and how much of their own analysis to incorporate based on their own judgment and risk tolerance. | Copy trading, however, often involves a higher degree of automation; users select a trader to copy, and trades are automatically mirrored in their account, giving them less control over individual trades. |
| Performance Transparency | Social trading platforms often provide more detailed analytics about a trader’s historical performance, trading style, and risk level, allowing users to make more informed decisions. | Copy trading platforms usually highlight overall performance metrics like return on investment, risk level, and the number of followers, which can simplify the decision-making process but offer less detail. |
| Risk and Reward | Investors of social trading platforms need to assess risks and make decisions by themselves, so the risks are relatively controllable. | Investors of copy trading platforms are entirely dependent on the performance of the person being copied, and the risk is relatively high. However, Investors of copy trading platforms can also earn higher returns if the person being copied does well. |
