Plattsburgh, New York, Proposes 12-Month Moratorium on AI Data Centers and Crypto Mining Projects
OdailyOdaily News: The city of Plattsburgh, New York, held a public hearing to discuss a temporary land-use moratorium on high-energy computing facilities such as AI data centers and cryptocurrency mining. If approved, the moratorium would suspend approvals for projects with electricity demands of 300 kilowatts or more for a period of 12 months.
As of Tuesday, Plattsburgh Mayor Wendell Hughes had not yet approved the moratorium. The city council plans to reconvene on September 17 to continue deliberating the proposal.
Plattsburgh previously enacted an 18-month ban on Bitcoin mining in 2018 due to residents' concerns about electricity costs. Currently, some crypto mining companies are pivoting to AI and high-performance computing operations, as the industry faces rising mining difficulty, higher electricity costs, and declining token prices.
